The Friday Project is an 8-week educational programme for people who are at an earlier stage in the trajectory of their progressive life-limiting illness and who do not yet (or may never) require regular involvement of the specialist palliative care services. It is aimed at promoting a greater sense of control and increased capacity and confidence for self-care. Over the 8-week period, participants learn about a number of relevant topics, practise relaxation and modified physical exercises, and benefit greatly from interaction with each other and with the facilitators. Throughout this time, participants remain under the care of their usual care team. Some may already be known to Sobell House but this is not a necessary criteria for participation. Carers are welcome to join the programme too.
Evaluation of the pilot programmes showed that participants had increased in confidence in the topics covered by the end of the course. Comments from previous participants include:
“wonderful window on how to deal with the ups and downs of life”
“I talk more freely to my consultant instead of pretending all is well”
“I didn’t feel so alone with my condition”
Referrals are made directly to Day Services for the Friday Project.
