Following your referral a decision that you should be admitted to our specialist inpatient unit may be made, and the length of time you will stay with us will depend on the reason you are with us, and the time it takes to arrange your discharge.
You will usually be admitted because you have a need for highly specialised care. It may be that you require our help to control difficult symptoms such as pain or breathlessness, or to relieve distress through emotional and psychological support. In most cases we aim to stabilise the situation and make you comfortable so that we can make arrangements for your discharge.
Patients have often requested to stay with us for longer but we are unable to provide long-term care. When you are discharged we will ensure that your ongoing care needs can be met either at home, if that is your wish, or through a community hospital or care home. We will provide support through our community team or day centre if appropriate. These decisions will be made in consultation with you and your family.
