Sobell House has its own dedicated social workers who work as part of the team providing support to patients on the inpatient ward and their families.

Social Care

We undertake work on behalf of Social & Community Services, and also the Continuing Care Service in Oxfordshire. This means that we can assess patients on the ward, and complete the relevant paperwork to obtain practical support. In some cases funding for these services can also be arranged.

Our social work team provides support to patients who wish to return home after a period in hospital, and who may require some assistance in order to remain at home. On some occasions we can assist in arranging live-in carers to support you to live in your home. Sometimes patients may not be able to go back home because it would be impractical and potentially unsafe, and social workers can assist with arranging a placement in a nursing or care home.

Social Work Interview

Once care is set up, or a nursing or care home is arranged, our social workers are also able to offer support once you have left the ward for a limited period of time. This enables us to review discharge plans, and liaise with relevant organisations for you where this is appropriate.

The Maggie’s Centre in Oxford provides some general services for people affected by cancer such as psychological support, stress management, yoga classes, ‘look good - feel better’ workshops, nutrition workshops, and more.

Benefits advice is also available from the Maggie’s Centre in Oxford. This service is free to anyone who is affected by cancer, and they provide advice on a range of issues such as benefits, tax, housing, employment issues. The benefits office also operates a drop in session every day.

These services are free, and you can find out more on 01865 225690.
